Optimism over Despair

Optimism over Despair: On Capitalism, Empire, and Social Change is an anthology of interviews by C. J. Polychroniou with Noam Chomsky, arguably the world’s most well-known critic of US policy.

In this book, published by Haymarket Books in April 2017, “Chomsky discusses the “war on terror,” neoliberalism, Israel and Palestine, Black Lives Matter, the refugee crisis and cracks in the European Union, the dysfunctional US electoral system, the climate crisis and our prospects for building a better world.”

The book is divided into three parts:

  1. An analysis of neoliberalism, imperialism, the EU, the role of religion in politics, and class polarization
  2. The Trump presidency including the long history of US foreign policy, as well as other topics such as health care, global warming and education policy.
  3. Various alternatives—anarchism, communism and socialism.

Noam Chomsky is widely regarded to be one of the foremost critics of US foreign policy. Chomsky is Institute Professor (emeritus) in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

C.J. Polychroniou is a political economist/political scientist who has taught and worked in universities and research centers in Europe and the United States. He writes for Truthout.
