Anthropocentrism is Idolatry

from: https://www.facebook.com/RevMichaelDowd

There is no future for humanity if we don’t come into right relationship to Reality, which includes all of nature and time… Reality is my god; Evidence is my scripture; and Ecology is my theology… any understanding of God that does not include what today what we mean by the word Reality, isn’t God…” Michael Dowd

Rev. Michael Dowd likes the YouTube moniker Reverend Reality. He proposes that “only a deeply meaningful and inspiring, evidence-based evolutionary worldview can help us co-create a just and thriving future at this emerging, planetary level of interdependence.” He says “religion is about right relationship to Reality, not the supernatural.” Our anthropocentrism is idolatry when we treat humans as the primary reality rather than part of all of nature and the cosmos.

Dowd is a “religious naturalist.” He believes evidence is the main way reality is revealing truth to us today – scientific, historic and cross-cultural evidence. Reality is one and it is revealed in nature and in mystery. He is an itinerant, “evolutional evangelist,” preaching a gospel of ecology to a broad audience ranging from atheists and skeptics to fundamentalist Christians.

In his digital audio course he presents interviews of 38 luminaries from nearly every denomination, including Nobel laureates and Templeton Prize-winners, to learn how they are personally and professionally inspired by “what God is revealing today through science.” What quickly became apparent was that, regardless of theological or liturgical differences…

  • we all see no conflict between faith & reason, head & heart, Jesus & Darwin
  • we all value scientific and historic evidence as divine communication
  • we all share a commitment to a just and healthy future

Since 2016, Michael Dowd’s focus is almost entirely on “Standing for the Future” and promoting Reality’s Rules: Ten Commandments to Avoid Extinction (check out the extensive hyperlinks for more information.)

Michael Dowd (@MBDowd) is the author of the 2009 book Thank God for Evolution: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World, which was endorsed by a half-dozen Nobel Prize–winning scientists and dozens of religious leaders, liberals and conservatives alike.

Since April 2002 Michael and his wife Connie have lived entirely on the road and have spoken to more than 2,200 secular and religious groups — from atheists to evangelicals — across North America.

Both are climate hawks and both on the Board of Advisors of the Religious Naturalist Association (RNA).

Michael Dowd’s mentor was Thomas Berry, the eco-theologian, cosmologist and Earth scholar who followed in the tradition of Teilhard de Chardin.

Nature is speaking.
