Shasta MLK Dream Gathering

The Beloved Community and Shasta County Citizens Advocating Respect (SCCAR) are having a Shasta MLK Dream Gathering on Monday, August 28, 2017  from 6:30-8 p.m. at the MLK Center, 1815 Sheridan St.  Redding  96001

The Shasta MLK Dream Gathering is a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. This free event will coincide with the national Ministers March for Justice on the 54th anniversary of his historic speech.

We will lift up local community organizations working in Shasta County to achieve equity in voting rights, criminal justice reform, healthcare and economic justice.

Participants will have the chance to share their ideas and commitment to building an inclusive, healthy community where every person is valued. Light refreshments will be served.

While this event was planned prior to the horrific violence by white nationalists in Charlottesville, VA, this shows the immediate need to directly confront the rise in racism and violent extremism in the United States and work towards achieving the goals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SCCAR was formed in 1988 in response to a racially motivated shooting that occurred in Redding. A group of citizens, outraged at this attack, decided it was time to publicly speak out against racism and racial violence.

SCCAR has evolved to become actively supportive of community efforts to oppose hate crimes of all types. The members of SCCAR work to promote social justice, equal opportunity and to increase awareness of the needs and concerns of all Shasta County’s varied communities.
