For several months United Way of Northern California has been bringing together a diverse group of community leaders to “create lasting solutions to multi-generational poverty issues and the effects of those issues in our local community.” Rather than just deal with symptoms they want to address the root causes issues of poverty in Shasta County and surrounding areas.

Their mission is to use a collective impact framework with the goal of:

  • Increasing self-sufficiency of residents
  • Increasing the financial security of residents
  • Increasing community vibrancy

To date, the Prosperity Committee has developed a common agenda and identified 6 key areas:

  1. Increasing Financial Stability
  2. Preparing a High Skill Workforce
  3. Building Community Pride & Identity/Enhancing Civic Engagement
  4. Developing Our Youth
  5. Achieving Economic Vitality
  6. Defining & Understanding Roots of Poverty

Work groups were formed in each area and have been meeting to determine goals, shared measurements, and mutually reinforcing activities to reach community goals.

On May 12, 2015 Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency and the United Way of Northern California hosted the National Association of Counties’ Shasta County Prosperity Summit. The Shasta County Prosperity Summit was facilitated by Barbara Wyckoff, CEO of Dynamica Consulting . Ms. Wyckoff introduced summit attendees to the WealthWorks framework and walked them through a number of visioning and mapping exercises to strengthen local and regional connections within the county’s high-tech sector.
