People of Progress is sponsoring a free Garden Talk by Wayne Kessler on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the social hall of First United Methodist Church (corner of South and east Streets) in Redding CA.

Kessler’s presentation will cover:

  • low cost and easy methods to increase yields, improve soil and use less water
  • how to bring your soil alive so it interacts better with your plants and retains moisture
  • how to choose varieties and types of vegetables to plant in drought years that will be more successful and use less water
  • how to cluster plants and use drip tape irrigation
  • when to water and how to gauge your plants’ needs
  • the importance of using mulch to save water and keep your plants stress-free

He’ll also discuss gardening in containers and the vegetable varieties and soil types that work best. The garden talk will last about an hour and will be followed by Q & A.

Kessler, former owner of Shaman Organics Nursery, is an advocate of growing food locally to create community food security and a stronger local economy.

People of Progress has been hosting free garden talks for 15 years and has two large community gardens, a food bank and a thrift store as part of their programs.
