Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2015

Martin Luther King Jr.

Selma, the movie may have got snubbed for multiple awards by the Academy, but Martin Luther King Jr. Day is still being remembered on January 19, 2015 in Redding, CA by Shasta County Multicultural Advisory Board. Here is a schedule of events:

8:00 AM – bell ringing ceremony inside of Old City Hall, 1313 Market St., Redding, CA
9:00 AM – worldwide bell ringing
9:30 AM – shuttle leaving the MLK Jr. Center to the Shasta Court House
10:00 AM – prayer circle the south parking lot at Court House on the corner of Court and Yuba St., Redding, CA
10:05 AM – sharing of prayers & spiritual wishes by community
10:30 AM – march from the Court House to the MLK Multicultural Center, 1815 Sheridan St., Redding, CA
11:00 AM – celebration program followed by lunch

The movie is timed because this year marks 50 years since the march from Selma and passage of the Voting Rights Act. 1965 was a year when “many leaders of the Civil Rights Movement called for freedom, equality, and justice not simply because any human has the right to expect these, but because these are promised by God and are the mark of God’s kingdom on earth as in heaven.”

As Elizabeth Drescher encourages us in Getting our Bearings, “I hope all of us will see the movie—twice, three times, even—and that we will see ourselves in it. Not, mind you, our historical selves, but the selves who will march God’s justice into the present day, widening rather than narrowing the circles of care that define the reach of our faith.”
