Geospatial Technologies Use For Good
Here are a few examples of how geospatial technologies can be used for good or evil:
- In April 2012, U.S. President Barack Obama issued an executive order that for the first time will allow U.S. authorities to impose sanctions on foreign entities who help authoritarian governments use modern technologies to commit human rights abuses. President Obama said “modern technology should be used to empower people, not oppress them.”
- The AAAS Science and Human Rights Program, with funding from the MacArthur Foundation, the Oak Foundation, and the Open Society Institute, is working to expand the applications of geospatial technologies to human rights issues through its Geospatial Technologies and Human Rights Project.
- Google Earth Outreach team is holding it’s first annual Geo for Good User Summit on September 26-28, 2012 in Mountain View, CA.
