Visualizing Climate Change

Most of us have seen the dramatic time lapse satellite image animations from an Inconvenient Truth showing recent reductions in the Arctic ice coverage in Greenland and north of Canada, but it is often hard to translate the impact of global warming locally, close to where we live. However, a phenomenon know as “king tides” will occur this weekend and again along the Pacific coast on February 7-9, 2012. These king tides can be up to nine feet higher than average. Images such as the one above can help us visualize the likely impact on damaged homes, business, flooded streets and devastating coastal erosion caused by global warming… and persuade our global political leaders to take appropriate actions to reverse the trend.
